New-Mom Challenges & How to Cope - PNSG

Being a mom can take a toll on someone both inside and out. Your body may not look the same – and you fear it never will again – and your emotions are not kept in check as well as it should be too. Because of that and perhaps the societal pressure, you feel the need to recover as well as feel and look better in no time, no matter how unrealistic of an expectation that is. On that note, here are some of the things you may face after having a baby and we’ll go over how to overcome them by the end of this article.

Changes in Your Body

There would be some lingering body aches which are normally due to what you have gone through during pregnancy and labour, but can still prolong for some time after you have given birth. Your back may feel weaker than ever and you may not be able to be back ‘up and running’ as fast as you thought you could.

On top of what it has gone through, your body and your hormones can still experience more unfamiliar things after pregnancy, mainly due to the childbirth and breastfeeding. For some mothers, breastfeeding can be a breeze. For many others, it can be filled with pains of engorgement, discomforts, and hopelessness – because you’d feel like you have done everything you could to make it better. Sometimes, conditions like low milk supply and latching difficulty come regardless of what you have tried, so be nice to your body and let yourself rest more.

You may be worried about how much weight you’ve put on. Keep in mind that these changes didn’t happen all at once. They took place slowly over nine months while your body was carrying your growing baby. So, be patient and give yourself and your body some time to recover. Some moms would say that since it took you that long to change, you should take a least that same time period as well for your body to go back to the pre-pregnancy figure.

Breastfeeding

One of the first things you would do after giving birth is to have your baby latch onto the nipple to be fed. Chances are, once you start breastfeeding, you may never stop until your baby is ready to wean. Breastfeeding can be a beautiful activity that allows you to bond better with your baby.

Unfortunately, it is often not a completely smooth experience for everyone. Some issues you may face related to breastfeeding include breast engorgement, mastitis, and blocked milk ducts.

Stress

Last but not least, the stress. Compared to others stated in here, this is the least talked about. But it is still valid and should not be turned a blind eye upon. If you have some time to prior to your birth, make a list of some things that normally help in releasing your stress – before and during pregnancy. Don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be something luxurious or hard to attain.

Stress is hard to prevent, but it is important that you know how to tackle it when it appears. So make that list as long as you possibly can and put different types of activities, from things you can do by lying in bed to other things you can do by turning on the laptop.

Find what works for you best. If you do end up feeling stressed, remember to give yourself a break. You deserve to spend time to release that stress, so the first step is to not feel bad for doing it.

How to cope with everything?

Everything feels overwhelming, especially with you not getting enough sleep most nights. Remember, there is always another shoulder that you can lean on and another hand that can help carry your burden. When you feel helpless, try these.

  • Take a break

First off, you need to make sure that you can have a break that isn’t just the time when your baby is asleep. Taking up confinement is a good move since it minimises the amount of work you have to do. Get enough rest and try not to get overwhelmed. To put it simply, focus on just recovering and healing.

  • Join a moms group

No two people experience the same exact thing, but at least when you share your issues to other moms, it is very likely that at least one of them would come up and say that she has also gone through the same thing. At that point, it would make at least one more person in that group feel better as they probably also go through the same thing.

Talking about motherhood matters with other people who also know what it’s like can make it easier, especially if you have always been the kind of person who can release your tension by talking to someone else. If you think this works for you, try to find at least one moms group or community to join.

  • Go for a therapy/treatment

It would also be helpful if you could have certain treatments that can help you in your postpartum recovery and maternity journeys. It doesn’t have to be something big and you can certainly start small. For instance, you can take up several sessions of postnatal massage. Postnatal massage has a lot of benefits that can make you feel better inside and out. To a certain extent, all the challenges listed above can also be tackled with a massage.

Not to mention, a tummy massage after delivery can extensively help you! It helps in the reparation of your womb as well as shaping your body up, something that new moms particularly look for. As a postnatal massage normally ends with belly binding, it also helps fix your posture!
